Gifts for Grads

Campus Units Give New Grads Alumni Memberships

Although graduation is a rite of passage, it shouldn’t be the end of our relationship, say the Office of Information Technology (OIT) and William F. Harrah College of Hotel Administration.

Each unit offers a one-year UNLV Alumni Association membership — valued at $25 — for selected new graduates in an effort to keep the new alumni connected to the university.

OIT has rewarded its student workers and graduating employees with memberships for about 10 years. As a thank-you for manning computer labs, performing technical duties, and working the help desks, 11 seniors received memberships this year.

"We have 74 student employees who work an average of 1,300 hours per week. We couldn’t do our work without them," said Carol Thoreson, program officer and human resources coordinator for OIT. "This is a special way of recognizing our students’ hard work."

Philip Ayala, ’09 BA Computer Science, said he would’ve joined the association on his own to stay connected to UNLV, but the membership gift is "generous, especially in this economy."

For Students, By Students
Purchasing memberships is now a two-year-old tradition of the Hotel College’s alumni chapter board of directors. After being nominated by faculty, 13 students received memberships at the college’s annual recognition event produced by students.

The peer-to-peer interaction is a selling point for the chapter, said Robyn Hadden, director of alumni and college relations in the college. "We end up getting students to join from the event."

The standard rate for a single alumni membership is $50. New graduates get half-off during the first two years after graduation. Association membership includes affiliation with the college chapter of your choice. Click on the alumni website to join the association or get more information.
