International Membership Gets Boost in Singapore
As if graduating in the inaugural class of UNLV Singapore weren’t exciting enough, Ng Xin Wei also won a one-year membership in the UNLV Alumni Association at a post-commencement reception.
"I believe (the association membership) is a great opportunity for me to keep in touch with fellow graduates, whether in Las Vegas or in Singapore," Ng said. "It also allows me to stay updated on what is happening at UNLV. Of course, it is a very good networking platform for new graduates like me."
Ng received a bachelor’s degree in hotel administration at the June 6 commencement. UNLV Singapore is the university’s first international campus and offers degree programs in hotel and hospitality administration.
Of 41 graduates in the Singapore class, 11 are now association members. Faculty of the William F. Harrah College of Hotel Administration purchased three memberships and gave them away in a drawing.
"We were excited to introduce new graduates of our international campus to the alumni association as a means of staying connected to UNLV," said Gail Sammons, a professor in the hotel college and an alumni association board member. She distributed membership materials on behalf of the association while in Singapore.
"That sense of connection through the association will be that much more important for these graduates, as they are 9,000 miles away from Las Vegas and the main campus," she said.
